THE EVENTS OF THE CONSULTATIVE SEMINAR ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS ORGANIZED BY “THE KUWAITI UNION OF WOMEN’S ASSOCIATIONS” IN COOPERATION WIT
Protection and Social Rehabilitation Center "AMAN" which is one of the centers of the Qatar Foundation for Social Work which in its turn affiliated with the Ministry of Social Development and Family took part in the Consultative Seminar on “Violence Against Women and Girls Causes and Consequences". The works of the Seminar were launched in the State of Kuwait, for three days during the current month and were headed by the president of the Board of Directors of the Kuwaiti Union of Women's Associations, HE Sheikha Fadia Saad Al- Abdullah Al-Sabah and in cooperation with the Geneva Institute for Human Rights and the United Nations. The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, Reem Al-Salem attended the seminar in addition to representatives of non-governmental organizations working in the field of violence against women and girls, the Resident Representative of the UN Development Program in Kuwait, Hideko Hadzialic, the Regional Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the United Nations Population Fund.
Sheikh Dr. Nasser bin Ahmed Al Thani, the Executive Director of AMAN Center participated in the works of the Consultative Seminar. This participation comes within the framework of the plans and programs of AMAN Center and its interest in activating the social, regional and international partnership between the center and the institutions of civil society, public and private sectors, and as a paradigm shift in the international efforts in order to prevent violence against the target groups of the Center, including women, children and the victims of family disintegration.
The consultative Seminar discussed three items in line with the main challenges facing women who are subjected to violence including an analysis of the root causes of violence against women in the Middle East and North Africa Region and possible ways for addressing them.
The Consultative Seminar aims to increase knowledge and information on women's rights, build the capabilities of the participants to understand the United Nations Special Procedures System and exchange the methodologies and strategies for enhancing women's rights in the region.
The Seminar also aims to provide the participants with the necessary knowledge to engage them in monitoring the implementation of women's rights in national public policies and to submit the preliminary recommendations of future reports of the United Nations Rapporteurs on violence against women and girls to the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council.
In this context, Sheikh Dr. Nasser bin Ahmed Al Thani- the Executive Director of the Protection and Social Rehabilitation Center "AMAN" expressed the participation of the Center in this Consultative Seminar through the presentation of the Center's experience in the field of social protection by highlighting the most significant services provided to women, including raising awareness, protection, rehabilitation and integration into society.
Sheikh Dr. Nasser bin Ahmed Al Thani also pointed out the hotline service (919) and temporary accommodation service as well as AMAN App services such as Shawreeni App which is allocated only for women.
Information and experiences were exchanged through the participation of different countries in this Seminar to find the best solutions and practices in order to prevent all types of violence against women and girls in addition to supporting the issue of violence against women and girls and working within the framework of the 17 sustainable development goals adopted by the United Nations to promote and protect human rights of women and girls.
It is noteworthy that the Kuwaiti Union of Women's Associations was established on the 25th of June 1994 in the State of Kuwait to support Kuwaiti women, unify their word, defend their rights, raise awareness on their duties, and coordinate the efforts for their progress and enhance their potentials in all fields and occasions at all the national, regional and international levels. The Union also aims to represent the women's associations in the State of Kuwait, realize their solidarity, defend their interests, and coordinate between them on national and local occasions, as well as work on strengthening the connections with the Gulf, Arab, continental and international unions working in the field of sustainable development for women and paying attention to highlighting the national identity in the external representation.
This Seminar coincides with the celebration of the Kuwaiti Union of Women's Association on Kuwaiti Women's Day, which falls on the 16th of May each year, recalling the role of the honorary president of the Union, Sheikha Latifa Al-Fahad Salem Al- Sabah, who worked to establish the foundations of this annual celebration.
