AMAN CENTER PARTICIPATES IN THE UN REGIONAL MEETING ON WOMEN IN BEIRUT

The Protection and Social Rehabilitation Center "AMAN", a center governed by the Qatar Foundation for Social Work, participated in the UN regional meeting on Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, which was held at the headquarters of the United Nations House in Beirut over two days this month, with the participation of members of the Subcommittee on Gender Equality, who represent the national force in advancing the role and empowerment of women, from the various ministries and national institutions concerned with social protection.

This participation aims to strengthen the capacities of the Subcommittee on Gender Equality in the field of women's economic involvement and the economics and policies of welfare.

In this context, Mrs. Amna Al Mahmoud, Director of the Protection Department at AMAN Center, expressed the goals of the center's participation in this meeting. This participation is a part of the center's plans and programs which aims to stimulate the societal, regional and international partnerships between AMAN center, government agencies, civil society institutions, the public and private sectors.

In addition, Ms. Nada Darwaza, Head of the ESCWA Centre for Women (ECW), delivered the opening speech of the regional meeting, followed by the speeches of Ms. Shatha Abdel Latif – the official concerned with women's agenda at the General Secretariat of the Arab League, and Ms. Janick van kuchler - Deputy Regional Director - UN Women.

During the meeting, the committee reviewed the measures taken by the Arab countries and participating members on issues related to women, and their efforts to promote gender equality. The committee also discussed a number of topics on the agenda including: lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic on integrating the concept of gender equality in response plans, and on understanding the extent of care provided at the national level and identifying the necessary changes, in addition to presenting a proposed approach to understanding and analyzing the extent of care provided at the national level, to determine the priorities and necessary changes, and a reviewing the results in some Arab countries. On the second day of the meeting, topics related to changes in the provision of services, social care and infrastructure were discussed. In addition to organizing specialized sessions to monitor the skills developed by ESCWA in the context of its work on the future of the labor market.

At the conclusion of its meeting, the committee approved a number of recommendations directed to ESCWA, and others directed to member states to work on implementing them in the coming days.

It is worth noting that UN Women is the United Nations Commission concerned with gender equality and the empowerment of women. The Commission is the primary platform for discussing issues related to women and girls, as it was established with the purpose of addressing their issues and working to meet their needs at the global level.

UN Women supports UN Member States in setting global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design the laws, policies, programs and services needed to ensure that those standards are effectively implemented to benefit women and girls around the world.
